T18. The Power of the Oceans and of Chemistry by Haidi Fiedler, INCT-Catalysis, UFSC, Brazil

C.Cell wants to know more about this mysterious substance called WATER. He has read about the importance of the H₂O Molecule¹ and GROUNDWATER for human survival², and is absolutely in love and amazed by the waves of the oceans of planet Earth.
The winds are very important for the formation of waves, as also are the different off-shore formats of the sea-bottom close to beaches. These determine the shape of the waves and are changing day by day with the effect of tides, surprisingly shifting the depths of coastal regions and the widths of the beaches. These help to make up the mysteries that accompany the beauty of the oceans – and force us to respect it.

All CHEMICAL-PHYSICAL FORCES are fascinating. At the bottom of the oceans there are other types of forces, HYDROTHERMAL VENTS, which are associated with the depths of the Earth, i.e. the forces of the Magma. On the ocean floor lie UNDERWATER ravines, excavations caused by floods, which can be deeper than the highest mountains on planet earth. While much of the ocean floor is "desert" with little or no life, in some places it seems that the biochemistry and chemistry explode as a vital source of pure ENERGY. In such places, near oceanic ridges (or submerged volcanoes) – through high "chimneys" called hydrothermal vents – HOT WATER is released. This HOT WATER (heat = energy) is rich in SULFUR, plus an abundance of different HEAVY METALS. Life in these neighborhoods appears in the form of a wide variety of animals – from molecules and atoms, which seem to dance to the sound of harmonic waves with a thirst for pure survival. Small molecules can aggregate, forming "new" molecules, with different arrangements of atoms, often almost in the absence of MOLECULAR OXYGEN³.

All this goes on in the deep ocean, where the strength of LIFE appears, combining the POWER of the OCEANS with the mysterious FORCES OF CHEMISTRY.

O PODER DOS OCEANOS E DA QUÍMICA

C.Cell quer saber mais sobre esta substância misteriosa chamada ÁGUA. Ele já leu sobre a importância da MOLÉCULA H₂O e das ÁGUAS SUBTERRÂNEAS para a sobrevivência da espécie humana^1,2 e, está absolutamente apaixonado e maravilhado pelas ondas dos Oceanos do Planeta Terra.

Os ventos são muito importantes para a formação das ondas, assim como o formato das diferentes plataformas marítimas nas praias. Essas determinam a forma das ondas e mudam dia a dia com o efeito das marés, mudando surpreendentemente a profundidade da região costeira e a largura da praia. Isso ajuda a construir os mistérios que acompanham a beleza dos oceanos e nos forçam a respeitá-los.

Todas as forças físico-químicas são fascinantes. No fundo dos Oceanos existem outros tipos de forças, as FONTES HIDROTERMAIS, as quais estão associadas com as profundezas do Planeta Terra, isto é, as forças do Magma. No FUNDO DOS OCEANOS existem RAVINAS SUBAQUÁTICAS, escavações provocadas por enxurradas, as quais podem ser mais profundas que as montanhas mais altas do planeta terra. Enquanto a maior parte do fundo dos Oceanos é como um "deserto", com pouca ou nenhuma forma de vida, em certos locais parece que a bioquímica e a química explodem como uma fonte de pura ENERGIA vital. Em tais locais, perto das CRISTAS OCEÂNICAS (ou vulcões submersos) - através "chaminés" altas denominadas FONTES HIDROTERMAIS – é liberada ÁGUA QUENTE. Esta água quente (calor = energia) é rica em ENXOFRE, mais uma abundância de diferentes METAIS PESADOS. Nessas redondezas aparece a VIDA, na forma de uma grande variedade de animais, moléculas e átomos, que parecem que dançam ao som de ondas harmônicas com sede de pura sobrevivência. Pequenas moléculas podem agregar-se formando "novas" moléculas, com diferentes conjuntos de átomos, muitas vezes, quase na ausência de OXIGÊNIO MOLECULAR³.

Tudo isso acontece no FUNDO DOS OCEANOS, onde a força da VIDA aparece, combinando o PODER dos OCEANOS com as misteriosas FORÇAS da QUÍMICA.

C. Cell quiere saber más acerca de esa misteriosa sustancia llamada AGUA. El ya leyó sobre la importancia de la MOLÉCULA de H₂O y de las AGUAS SUBTERRÁNEAS para la sobrevivencia de las especie humana^1,2 y está absolutamente apasionado y maravillado por la olas de los Océanos del Planeta Tierra.

Los vientos son muy importantes para la formación de las olas, así como la forma de las diferentes plataformas marítimas en las playas. Ellas determinan la forma de las olas y cambian día a día con los efectos de las mareas, cambiando sorprendentemente la profundidad de la región de la costa y el ancho de la playa. Eso ayuda a construir los misterios que acompañan la belleza de los océanos y nos obligan a respetarlos.

Todas las fuerzas físico químicas son fascinantes. En el fondo de los océanos existen otros tipos de fuerzas, las FUENTES HIDROTÉRMICAS, las cuales están asociadas con las profundidades del Planeta Tierra, estas son las fuerzas del MAGMA. En el FONDO DE LOS OCÉANOS existen barrancos subacuáticos, excavaciones profundas provocadas por inundaciones, las cuales pueden ser más profundas que las montañas más altas del Planeta Tierra. Mientras que el fondo de los océanos es como un "desierto", con muy poca o ninguna forma de vida, en ciertos lugares parece que la bioquímica y la química explotan como una fuente de pura ENERGÍA vital. En estos lugares, cerca de las crestas oceánicas (o volcanes subterráneos) - a través de "chimeneas" altas denominadas FUENTES HIDRTÉRMICAS – se libera AGUA CALIENTE. Esta agua caliente (calor= energía) es rica en AZUFRE, además de varios METALES PESADOS. En esos lugares aparece la VIDA bajo la forma de una gran variedad de animales, moléculas y átomos que parece que danzan al son de son de ondas armónicas con una sed de pura sobrevivencia. Pequeñas moléculas pueden agregarse formando "nuevas" moléculas, con diferentes conjuntos de átomos, muchas veces casi en ausencia de OXÍGENO MOLECULAR³.

Todo eso ocurre en el FONDO DE LOS OCÉANOS, donde la fuerza de la vida aparece, combinando el PODER de los OCÉANOS con la misteriosas FUERZAS de la QUÍMICA.
